If you are thinking about doing a bedroom renovation this year, here is a breakdown of how much you would pay for each element in your room. Click on the sections for a more thorough breakdown.

If you are looking for an affordable, high-quality futon for your bedroom renovation, contact us.

Bedroom renovations can cost on average anywhere from $5,000 - $50,000 CDN

1. Factors that Affect the Cost of Your Bedroom Renovation

There are several things that will affect the cost that you pay for your bedroom renovation. These include:

Labour:

This is probably the biggest factor that will determine how much you will end up paying. If you do the work yourself, then you will pay much less than if you hire professionals to do it.

If you are not used to doing do-it-yourself projects and are afraid that you might not do a good job, then you could consider doing a combination of hiring a professional to do the more difficult tasks such as installing flooring and you could do the simpler ones such as painting.

Quality of Materials:

There is a wide range of prices for things like beds, futons, dressers, and accessories. You need to decide whether you want to spend as little as possible or invest in higher quality pieces that will last longer.

A good rule of thumb is to choose neutral colours and classic styles for things like your flooring and window treatments that are more expensive to install, and invest in higher quality materials so that they will last for years. You can spend less on your accessories like pillows and bedding that you can change after a few years if you get tired of them and want a fresh look.

Size of Your Room:

A smaller bedroom is going to cost much less to renovate than a larger one. More square footage means that you have to purchase more flooring, paint, and furnishings to complete the project. It will also take longer to do, so your labour costs will go up.

This video will show you what is involved in installing laminate flooring for yourself

2. Total Cost: $5,000 - $50,000 CDN

An average bedroom renovation will cost anywhere from $5,000 CDN for a simple "cosmetic" renovation of a smaller room to $50,000 CDN or more to do a thorough, complex renovation such as an attic, basement or garage conversion into a bedroom. Conversions cost more because you may need to install insulation, drywall, windows, doors, molding, or put up dividing walls.

3. Flooring: $250 - $9,000 CDN

Replacing flooring can be expensive depending on the type that you want. A new hardwood floor will be your most expensive option followed by a ceramic tile. If you want the look of hardwood without the huge pricetag, then laminate is a good option.

Carpeting is a great, less expensive option for your bedroom and it is much warmer on your feet. If your current flooring is in good shape and you want to just give it a fresh look, you could purchase an area rug.

Purchasing an area rug is a great, inexpensive way to spruce up a boring bedroom floor

4. Paint: $300 - $800 CDN

Painting your bedroom walls is a relatively inexpensive part of your renovation and it can give you a great fresh look. A bedroom is a low impact area, so you could use a flat or matte paint that would cost you less.

Remember to fill in any holes in your walls and prime them before you paint. You also need to include the cost of paint brushes and tape in your estimate. As well, don't forget about giving the ceiling a coat of paint too! An accent wall done in a bold colour can also give you a dramatic look without costing you too much.

5. Window Treatments: $45 - $1,200 CDN

The cost of your window treatments will vary depending on the type of covering you choose, the size of your window, the shape of your windows, and if you want them to be motorized. You can choose from:

If you get them professionally installed (which is a good idea, especially if you opt for more expensive treatments), you can expect to pay anywhere from $145 to $500 for installation on each window.

It's probably best to have a professional install your window treatments

6. Beds: $500 - $2,000+ CDN

Your bed is one of your most important purchases. You want to make sure that you get one that is going to give you a good night's sleep. The price you pay for your bed will depend on the type, size, and quality that you choose.

A foam mattress will be your cheapest option, but it will not be very comfortable nor will it last long. Memory foam mattresses cost more, but they can give you an incredibly comfortable sleep.

A great way to save money on a bed purchase for your bedroom renovation, especially for small spaces, is to invest in a quality futon. A futon is a multi-purpose piece of furniture. You can use it as a seating area during the day and then easily convert it to a comfortable bed at night.

Quality futons are just as comfortable as a bed. A futon will also give your more floor space to move around during the day which is another wonderful feature, especially if you have a smaller bedroom.

7. Dressers: $400 - $2,000 CDN

If you are short on closet space, then a dresser is a great investment. The price you pay will depend on the size and quality of dresser that you purchase. Do some research online to find the best deals available. You might also want to invest in a nightstand or two. These can range anywhere from $50 - $500 CDN.

8. Lighting: $50 - $200

If the lighting is poor in your bedroom, or if you like to read before you go to bed, then a bedroom lamp will be a great addition to your bedroom renovation. Instead of purchasing new, take a look in thrift stores or online markets like Facebook marketplace. You might find a great retro chandelier or lamps for much less than buying new.

Living in a small space doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style or functionality. Whether you’re in a compact apartment, a dorm room, or creating a guest-friendly home office, futons are a game-changer. These versatile pieces combine comfortable seating and a convenient sleeping solution, making them perfect for multi-functional living. At The Futon Shop, we offer a wide selection of high-quality futons designed to fit your space and lifestyle. Here’s your guide to finding the best futon for small spaces and multi-functional homes. Why Futons are Perfect for Small Spaces Futons are specifically designed with versatility and practicality in mind, making them an excellent investment for those looking to maximize their living space. Here’s what makes them shine in compact homes: Space-saving: Futons serve as both a couch and a bed in one compact design. When you’re not using it as a bed, it folds neatly into a stylish sofa, freeing up valuable floor space. Multi-Functional: Whether you need a place to sit during the day or a guest bed at night, a futon can seamlessly adapt to your needs. Budget-Friendly: Compared to buying both a sofa and a separate bed, futons are cost-effective without compromising on functionality. Choosing the Right Futon for Your Space When shopping for a futon, consider your room size, design preferences, and how often you’ll use it as a bed. Here are some key tips to help you choose the perfect one: 1. Measure Your Space: Before making a decision, measure your room to find the right futon size. Compact futons with minimalist frames are ideal for tight spaces. If you have a little more room, a full-size or queen-size futon can offer additional comfort and sleeping space. 2. Consider the Mattress Type: The type of mattress you choose affects your comfort. At The Futon Shop, we offer options ranging from memory foam to wool or latex blends. For regular sleeping, prioritize thicker, supportive mattresses. For occasional guest use, thinner mattresses may be sufficient without taking up too much space. 3. Match Your Décor: Your futon should enhance your room’s style. Luckily, modern futons come in a variety of designs, from sleek and contemporary to cozy and classic. Look for frames in wood or metal finishes that complement your existing furniture, and don’t forget about choosing a mattress cover that matches your colour scheme. 4. Opt for Storage-Friendly Futons: If you’re short on storage space, consider futons with built-in compartments. These hidden gems allow you to easily store bedding, pillows, or other essentials without adding extra clutter to your room. Top Futon Styles for Compact Living At The Futon Shop, we pride ourselves on offering a range of futons that combine style, comfort, and practicality. Here are a few standout options perfect for small spaces and multi-functional homes: Convertible Sofa Futons: These futons quickly transform into a bed with just a few adjustments and feature sleek modern designs ideal for minimalist spaces. Armless Futons: Without bulky arms, these futons consume less space and maintain a fresh, open look. Futon Bunk Beds: Perfect for kid’s rooms or shared living spaces, these combine a traditional futon with a bunk bed, optimizing vertical space. Tri-Fold Futons: With a unique design that folds into three parts, tri-fold futons are incredibly compact when stored yet comfortable when in use. Why Choose The Futon Shop?
