Furniture Troubleshooting For Futons:
1. Your futon mattress is sagging
One of the most common problems futon owners have is that their mattress eventually starts to sag. One of the main causes of a saggy futon mattress is that the slats on your frame are too far apart or they are not wide enough. When choosing your futon, take a close look at the slats. They should be at least two and a half to three inches wide. This is a good rule of thumb for both metal and wooden futons.
If you have a metal futon frame that has metal slats, the metal will start to dig into your mattress over time and cause it to sag. Higher quality metal futons are designed with hardwood slats instead of metal. This type of slat will give your mattress better support and stop it from sagging.
Solutions
Place a board under your mattress:
If your futon mattress is sagging, you can try placing a board underneath it to give it more support. You can use a lightweight piece of plywood cut to fit inside your futon frame. This really is a temporary solution because you will need to find a place to store this board each time you fold up your futon. If your space is limited, then this may not be your best option.
Flip your mattress:
You can try flipping and rotating your mattress. Doing this on a regular basis can help prevent you from getting sagging areas especially if you continually sit in the same spot. Try flipping and rotating your mattress about once a month. This practice will help to redistribute the filling inside your mattress and will help it to last longer.
Add a second mattress:
If you have another futon mattress laying around, you can try putting it underneath your current mattress to give you an extra layer of support and help ease the sagging. You may find, however, that your futon won't fold up properly with two mattresses so you may have to remove the extra mattress which can be a lot of work.
Purchase a new mattress:
There comes a point when your mattress is beyond temporary fixes and will just need to be replaced. There are many different types and qualities of futon mattresses that you can purchase. The cheapest one is not always your best option. Choose one that is comfortable and will last a long time. Check for a warranty as well. Better quality futon mattresses will come with a 3 to 5 year warranty.

2. Your futon won't fold out properly
You may find that your futon is not folding up like it should or it may get jammed.
Solutions
Remove everything on top:
One furniture troubleshooting trick you can try if your futon won't fold out properly is to take everything off of the frame including the mattress, pillows, bedding, etc. This is because something might have become stuck in the frame causing it to jam. If that is the case, then when you are removing the articles on top of the frame you will notice if something is caught and you can gently pull it out. Try not to rip any material or apply too much force as you don't want to damage your frame in the process.
Check the hinge pins:
If nothing is jammed into your frame, then take a look at the hinge pins that connect the various parts of your frame together. If one of them is missing, loose, or not screwed in properly, then that could be what is causing the problem.
Check the nuts and bolts:
Take a look at all of the nuts and bolts on your futon frame. If any are loose, then tighten them up.
Check the rollers:
If your frame has rollers, then check to make sure that they are clean and free from debris as excess dirt and foreign objects can cause the rollers to get stuck.

3. Your futon mattress is stained
Over time your futon mattress can get stained especially if you use it a lot.
Solutions
Remove and clean the cover:
If you already have a cover on your futon, then you can remove the cover and clean it. Make sure you check for and follow any manufacturer's cleaning instructions such as "dry clean only." If you can machine wash the cover, it is probably best to use the gentle cycle and a mild detergent. It is also a good idea to wash it by itself so that it doesn't get damaged or pulled by zippers or other objects in the machine.
Clean the mattress:
If your futon doesn't have a cover on it, then you can try cleaning the mattress itself. First vacuum or brush any dust, crumbs, hair, lint, or other debris from your mattress. Mix a solution of mild detergent and water and using a soft cloth, such as a microfibre one, test a small hidden area for colorfastness. Gently rub the stain until it is removed.
Once the stain is removed, wipe it with a clean cloth that is dampened with warm water to remove any excess detergent. Blot the damp area with a dry towel to remove any excess moisture. You can also use a blow dryer to dry the spot further.
Purchase a futon cover:
If you can't remove the stains from your futon mattress and your mattress is still in good shape, then why not purchase a futon mattress cover. They come in a wide variety of colours and patterns, so you can easily find one to suit your taste and decor.

4. You can feel the springs/slats through your mattress
Over time you may start to feel the springs or slats through your futon mattress. This can be very uncomfortable and it can make it difficult to sleep.
Solution
Purchase a new mattress:
If your mattress is worn out and very thin, then it is probably time to replace it. If your futon frame is also past its best then maybe its time to invest in a new high quality futon. Companies like the Futon Shop offer great deals on futon packages that include both the frame and the mattress. They are Canadian made and come in a wide selection of styles, materials, and price points.

"We purchased from here instead of getting something shipped from Amazon because we were hoping for better quality & better customer service, not to mention supporting local, and we were not disappointed. Everyone we spoke with was super kind & helpful, our order was ready quickly and they fully loaded it into our vehicle, and when we had a slight issue with our order they were extremely quick to resolve it. The futon looks great and the mattress is really comfy. We did go with the tahoe pine frame which is not the best quality wood, but that’s to be expected in our price range - opt for better if you can afford it. Overall, worth the extra drive to Burlington (or the shipping cost if you get delivery).
